Session 1, Wednesday, Nov. 3, 2004, 10-11:30am:

ONLINE CATALOGS RELATED TO JAPANESE STUDIES

In this session, we will cover searching for Japanese resources through the Cornell Catalog. We will also use the Library Gateway to access several databases that can be used for your research, including union catalogs like Eureka (RLG) and Worldcat (OCLC), indexes like the Bibliography of Asian Studies, and full text resources like JSTOR, and Project Muse. We will then discuss Japanese online catalogs like Webcat (NII), Webcat Plus (NII), WINE (Waseda University), and NDL-OPAC (The National Diet Library), and how you can use them to learn what scholarly research has been done on your topic. We will briefly discuss using Interlibrary Loan (ILL) to obtain materials from Waseda University and the National Diet Library.

Part 3: Obtaining items through ILL

From the Library Gateway, click on Interlibrary Loan
See, Sharon Domier's guide to using ILL http://www.library.umass.edu/subject/easian/pathfinders/FromZassakutoILL.pdf

Part 4: Other issues regarding the use of Japanese Electronic Resources

Computer Isuses: To use the above catalogs and databases on your own computer, you will need to set up Japanese capability.

Romanization:

When searching Japanese databases you need to use Kunrei-shiki romanization, long vowels must therefore be entered correctly with long o as "ou" and long u as "uu." For the Cornell Catalog, Eureka, and Worldcat, use romaji in Modified Hepburn romanization.
