The Boxer Rebellion

The Boxer Rebellion of 1900 in contemporary photographs

A series of photographs showing the amount of destruction caused by heavy shelling of the Boxers. Much of the architecture and infrastructure of the western concessions as they existed in 1900 was destroyed, including the famous Villa Detring (which can be seen here as an empty hull along a canal with its prominent chimney stacks), the railway station, Herbert Hoover's mansion (exhibited in the adjacent case), and other residential and commercial quarters of the concessions of the western powers.
